The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus announces the launch of the new website spaniespathisis.com which will henceforth be the information portal for people with rare diseases on the island.
Rare diseases are diseases that occur rarely in the population and are often difficult to diagnose because of their rarity. Some examples of rare diseases include:
Hutchinson-Gilford Syndrome (Progeria): It is a rare genetic disorder that affects the way children age, making them look like old people at a very young age.
Pompe disease: This is a rare genetic disease that affects glycogen metabolism and leads to muscle weakness.
Marfan syndrome: It is a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissues, causing problems in the heart, bones and other systems.
Von Willebrand disease: This is a genetic disorder of hemoglobin that causes bleeding problems.
Huntington’s disease: It is a degenerative disease of the nervous system that affects motor skills and mental health.
The development and understanding of these rare diseases often requires collaboration between medical and research experts.
